CPD Officers Get Tazed – by Police Chief, Shane Roberts – 11/1/2008
The Cottageville Police Department had two of its officers get zapped by 50,000 volts of electricity. The officers were part of a Tazer certification class conducted by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office. The class allows the two officers to carry Tazers. A Tazer is a tool that can facilitate the apprehension of a suspect without injury to the suspect or officer. The Tazer discharges an non lethal electrical impulse with no side effects. Officers learned about the operation, safety and effects of the Tazer. Each officer had the Tazer performed on them to understand the effects of the unit. Over 50,000 volts flowed through the wires into the officer’s body but because it was less than one amp of voltage the officers were not harmed. The officers’ muscles contracted, preventing the officer from moving. Once the unit was turned off, the officer was able to move freely without any side effects. The Cottageville Police Department currently has four Tazers in use by its officers.
